Hi Steve,
The data at the site came from the Clementine spacecraft operated by the
Navy, which mapped the moon using several different wavelengths.
If the structures are a crashed probe, that was one huge probe. I will
look at the scale, but I'm sure the crater is several kilometers across
since in some images the curvature of the moon's horizen is clearly
visible. These long, crane-like structures are visible in or around
craters in several other photos I have from other missions. Richard
Hoagland and Bruce Cornet and others have speculated that the long
structures are cranes or chutes used in mining operations. The
Clementine mission itself was designed to identify mineral deposits,
since the wavelengths chosen were correlated with rock samples brought
back from the Apollo missions.
